"TomKat"

Since I created this account I figured I'd use it to mouth of on different things that either pop in my head or make me curious or just down right piss me off. That's basically why I'm about to rant about the whole Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes relationship.

At the movie theater here they have a stand with free magazines (called Tribute Magazine) which have articles and interviews solely promoting upcoming movies. When I went to see The Fantastic Four on Thursday I picked up the latest issue. The cover story: "TomKat" (the first time the media used a blended name for a couple back when Ben Affleck and Gwenyth Paltrow were "Benyth" it was clever, it not anymore) I was just in the washroom (home bathroom, where I had put the magazine for reading material) when I started reading the article. Two things in the article irked me. Firstly, in it they go on about how the media has turned on the couple, how the media claims this relationship is a scam to promote Cruise's War of the Worlds and Holmes' Batman Begins (in regards to Batman Begins I doubt it help it at all, if anything it probably contributed to the movie's drop off in box office). As proof against this the article quotes Cruise as saying he "respects" Holmes.

Oh really? I find that hard to believe. Holmes was a devote Catholic who just earlier this year gave an interview where she praised her faith for being a guiding light and source of strength in her life, something that has helped her since she was a child and strengthened her family relationships. She starts dating Cruise and now she's a scientologist. Cruise has already taken over control of her carreer, forbidding her to take some potentially important roles because they don't hold with "his" Scientology views.

Neither of these sound like respect to me.

Secondly, on Holmes' part she keeps talking in interviews about how much she loves "Tom Cruise" and who great she feels since she's in love with "Tom Cruise". Not "Tom" ... its "Tom Cruise". Smacks of much hero worship to me. She's not dating him cause he's a guy she likes, she's dating him cause he's "Tom Cruise", Movie Star she idolized as a little girl (which she has said herself).

To try to make a point out of all this, I used to really respect and admire Cruise, but in the last 2 months (has it really only been this short of time?) he's managed to ruin that goodwill. He's really starting to alienate his fans, by acting like a man frightened by his 40s suddenly dating a star struck girl who he can control and make himself feel younger.

I realise this is a silly thing to rant about, but its just that its all over the news and I can't believe these people can't see how insincere they themselves sound. If I'm completely off base then I hope them both the best. This IS after all just outside observation. That said, if its not, I hope they both smarten up soon.

Oh, and yes I feel stupid for having just written all this about a tabloid couple. ;-) I miss the days when Cruise kept his mouth shut and stuck to saving drowning people on his vacations.

I think Tom Cruise is head over heels in love with Katie Holmes. Also, because he's older and has more life experience, I think that is why it seems like he's the dominant one in the relationship, he certainly has a more successful and longstanding career. I also think Katie is not only in love with Tom Cruise but is also star struck and is basically hanging on for the ride of being engaged to "TOM CRUISE." Also, people do crazy things when they fall in love. I think Katie is also trying to please Tom and not necessarily convert to Scientology but learn more about his religion, ya know. Eh, I dunno. That's basically what I have surmised.

No, you're probably right. My impression is basically the same but much more jaundiced. Maybe I'm just bitter. ;-) I'm just annoyed at how this has become such a huge story... which is funny since I'm talking about it myself.

Well, it's hard NOT to talk about it, when it's practically shoved in your face for a lengthy period of time. I wrote something about Katie and Tom quite a while back too. Basically, that I can't stand Katie Holmes, probably because of her show Dawson's Crack and other stuff.

I always thought she was really cute (well before she got even more skinny the last couple years), but I could never stand that show.

Its funny that when I moved into this bedroom in February I put my drawing of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes next to each other on my wall. A month later they're dating. I moved her last week. ;-)
